Case Study: A wave crashing against a barrier.

During Storm Doris in February 2017, a client of ours had his roof severely damaged. The client owns an outdoor market place which is used by stall holders to sell to the public. The roof was made of glass and the storm had caused some panels to smash completely, leaving shards of glass in the fitting and hairline cracks. The damage made it too dangerous to allow customers and stallholders into the premises. In addition to this, the storm also blew the Portacabin, that was used as offices, over on top of our client’s wife’s car!

We quickly contacted insurers and got the client’s repairs approved over the phone so he could proceed to get the premises (and the car) back up and running again as quickly as possible.

The claim was settled completely in less than 2 months. Furthermore, the client had not noticed that the initial payment from his insurers was slightly less than the invoices that were submitted until we rang him and advised that we had a further amount of £280 authorised as well.

The client was extremely happy with the outcome and the speed in which his claim was resolved.

One of our existing clients is a Data Communications Engineer. He supplies and installs data communication devices, conducts site surveys and manufactures some associated products such as cables. The client holds his Employers Liability, Public & Products Liability and Professional Indemnity insurances with us.

He contacted us to advise that he had been offered a contract in the Republic of Ireland doing some valuations at a Chemical Works. Knowing that insurers often charge additional premiums for work overseas and/or for work they consider as ‘hazardous’ premises. The client was anxious about the additional premium he might be charged for this job.

Not only did we managed to get an answer within one hour, but we also got insurers to include the additional risk free of charge, leaving the client free to accept the contract knowing that his business would still be fully insured.

The client was very happy and thanked us for our quick and efficient service.

One of our clients has a collection of cars, ranging from a Ferrari to a vintage car, as well as historic racing cars. He contacted us to ask if we could insure an engine. With experience arranging insurance for vehicle parts, we felt we had the knowledge and skills to find an appropriate policy for his engine.

The engine in question turned out to be a vintage aircraft engine, worth a six-figure sum and with its own transportation trailer.

Insuring an aircraft engine is not commonplace, as you can imagine. But, armed with a photograph, so we could understand what we were being asked to insure, we spoke directly to the underwriters to discuss the matter. They made their decision on the perceived risk and with a common sense approach rather than a computer generated rating, we both agreed that the risk was acceptable, especially considering the engine was part of a collection.

The client was delighted, as everyone else had turned him down. He was not only able to obtain cover, but he realised it would all be covered under one single policy.

A new client approached us at the beginning of April facing an issue obtaining renewal terms from their holding broker and insurers. The client was concerned as without insurance in place, his businesses could not trade. With just 5 days until the renewal date, it didn't provide much time to re-arrange it elsewhere.

Here at Routen Chaplin, we listened to the problems surrounding his current broker and identified all of his risk exposures and insurance requirements. We got to work, trying to obtain quotations and ultimately the most appropriate cover.

We managed to arrange his insurance cover for all four of his businesses, which included 22 separate policies covering a variety of risks. The client expressed how pleased he was that his businesses could continue to trade without any disruption. He was also very grateful that all his insurance policies had been thoroughly reviewed and rectified in the most professional manner.

It’s not just about price!

We are often asked why people should use a broker when most insurance policies can be purchased online. We always give the same answer: it’s always about personal service, personal circumstances and knowing your customer to ensure optimum cover is provided.

Whilst discussing renewal terms with a long-standing client on the insurance for their main home, it was brought to our attention that the client also had two holiday homes which were insured separately. We suggested that it might be possible to obtain a better policy suited to the client’s needs by combining the insurance for the main home and holiday homes under one policy.

Using our wealth of knowledge and experience, we approached the appropriate markets in order to obtain the best possible quotations which would provide accurate cover for the client. A service which is not available when using the internet, since it is simply a machine.

Subsequently, all three properties were covered under the one policy at a significant premium reduction for the client, whilst providing excellent cover on all properties.
